Permanent environmental monitoring for development

At SQM Iodo Plant Nutrition, we maintain an active commitment to the conservation of the ecosystems where we operate.

We implement robust environmental monitoring plans, based on hydrogeological and biological studies, which allow us to constantly assess the state of the environment and ensure sustainable operations.

All our operations have been evaluated and approved by environmental authorities, and each one incorporates specific environmental protection measures that are verified through regular monitoring.

Where do we implement these plans?

These monitoring activities are mainly carried out in northern Chile, around the areas where iodine and specialized fertilizer extraction and processing operations take place.

Llamara Salt Flat

In 2013, the Salar de Llamara was incorporated into the Pampa del Tamarugal National Reserve, as it was considered a priority site in the regional biodiversity strategy, due to the presence of a native forest of tamarugos and puquios with bacterial formations.

Monitoring of Tamarugo Trees and Vegetation in Llamara
We conduct annual monitoring to track the health of the tamarugo trees. The study evaluates their water status and vegetation development in the Puquios de Llamara area.

Among the variables measured are:

  • Leaf water potential
  • Stomatal resistance
  • Carbon-13 isotopic discrimination
  • Oxygen-18 enrichment

Monitoring of Aquatic Biota and Surface Water in Llamara
We monitor aquatic biota and surface water in the Llamara springs every six months to control for unforeseen effects.

Among the variables monitored are:

  • Composition of phytoplankton and phytobenthos
  • Diversity of zooplankton and benthos
  • Development and status of macrophytes

Hydrogeological environmental monitoring plan

We monitor monthly measurements of aquifer level, chemical quality, and extraction volume and flow rate from water wells.

This plan allows us to confirm the predicted impact during project operation and serves as a tool for activating the Early Warning Plan.

Environmental management plan for tamarugos

We are continuing with the Tamarugo Environmental Management Plan, which began seven years ago with the Planting Program in the Pozo Almonte commune of the Tarapacá Region, where more than 12,000 tamarugo trees have been planted in the Bellavista sector and around 247 in the Llamara sector.

Initiatives developed to date:

  • Animal Health: Veterinary operations were carried out and first aid kits for livestock were distributed, along with training on the use and handling of medications.
  • Food Support: 100 tons of alfalfa pellets (4,000 25 kg bags) were distributed to the local livestock association.
  • Productive Strengthening: Machinery was delivered to optimize the production of supplemental feed for livestock.
  • Sustainable Agriculture: The “Alfalfa Production Center” project was implemented within the Reserve, with 10 hectares in production and a total of 3,200 alfalfa bales produced.
  • Reforestation and Environmental Protection: 500 trees (Tamarugos and Churquis trees) to act as a natural windbreak and protect the 30 productive hectares of the project.
